The Museum & Visitor Center of the Bastrop County Historical Society, located at 904 Main Street in downtown Bastrop, is the heart of Bastrop’s living history. Operated by a dedicated nonprofit team of trustees, volunteers, and staff, the Society works to preserve, interpret, and share the layered stories of Bastrop County.

Rich in History

  • Rich Collections: Since its founding in 1952, the museum has assembled a vast and diverse collection of artifacts and documents, including more than 6,000 archival items such as letters, maps, land records, and photographs, along with more than 4,000 historic photos. These pieces tell stories of early settlers, Native American life, frontier colonial days, and the significant events that shaped Bastrop County.
  • Exhibits: Visitors can explore both permanent and rotating exhibits. The permanent exhibits cover major chapters in county history, including El Camino Real de los Tejas, the Texas Revolution, coal mining in Bastrop, the devastating Bastrop wildfire, World War II, and the life of Bastrop’s own Governor Joseph D. Sayers. Special exhibits change periodically, offering fresh perspectives and highlighting different facets of local heritage.
  • Archives & Research Library: Beneath the museum lies a research library, accessible to genealogists, historians, students, and anyone curious about Bastrop’s past. The archive is well organized, with volunteers cataloging and digitizing documents so that family histories and community research can thrive.
  • Guided Tours: The museum offers docent-led tours (included in admission), which provide a richer, more personalized experience. For groups, there are special tours—including large group tours, school field trips with interactive elements like scavenger hunts, and walking or bus tours of Bastrop’s historic district.
  • Visitor Center Role: More than just a museum, the Visitor Center is a hub for tourists and locals alike. It offers information on downtown Bastrop, historic walking tours (homes, film trail, etc.), local events, dining, shopping, and more. It helps connect visitors with the broader cultural life of Bastrop County.
  • Community & Events: The center is deeply woven into the community’s life. The Society hosts a variety of public events—special exhibits, holiday celebrations, live music, and themed events like the Baron de Bastrop’s birthday.
