Smithville Crawford Municipal Airport, Bastrop County’s only airport, was “founded” by WWII veterans in the late 1940s as a flying club with light airplanes and a grass runway. Town archives from the late 1970s confirm that the Smithville Flying Club held meetings twice a month at the airport clubhouse. This passion planted the seeds for the community aviation hub that exists today.

In 1976, the city acquired 62 acres near the original site to construct a municipal airport. Additionally, in 1976, during a dedication ceremony, the airport was named after Albert Crawford, who was the mayor in 1976.

The airport is 4,000 ft. long by 75 ft. wide with an asphalt surface, and has a pilot’s lounge, fuel and hangers. Two courtesy vans are available for pilot use.

The land now features 16 new hangars and serves as a hub for flight training and aviation services, with one flight school and three certified flight instructors (CFIs), and recreational flying, and is a training ground for emergency and military pilots with landings, takeoffs and touch-and-goes.

The active Pilot Association supports the Annual Smithville Fly-In which is an event that brings in light planes and helicopters from all around the state and allows attendees to view them up close, EAA Young Eagles® Rallies, and various public events.
